TL;DR

Findings§1

Where Cynomi leads

  • MSP-native delivery model. Purpose-built for MSPs, MSSPs, and vCISO consultancies delivering security services across many client accounts — one platform, N tenants, shared analyst layer. vCISO Lite is direct-sold with optional white-label; not built primarily around a channel-partner GTM.
  • Elevate Partner Program. Structured Silver/Gold/Platinum tiers with market-development funds, co-marketing, and dedicated enablement that scale with revenue commitments.[1] vCISO Lite ships a lightweight referral path, not a tiered channel program.
  • Encoded vCISO methodology. Cynomi’s “CISO Intelligence” embeds decision-making logic into workflows so junior analysts can produce senior-level outputs.[2] vCISO Lite bakes methodology into templates too, but positions a named practitioner alongside — the tools serve the vCISO, not replace one.
  • MSP reference outcomes. Cited case studies include CompassMSP closing new business ~5× faster and ECI reporting ~30% margin improvement on security services.[3] vCISO Lite hasn’t published equivalent MSP-margin case studies (customer set skews toward direct buyers).
  • Long-standing partner ecosystem. MSP-PSA integrations (ConnectWise, HaloPSA) and MSP-conference presence. Founded 2021; vCISO platform launched 2022. vCISO Lite’s integration surface prioritizes direct-buyer stacks (identity providers, cloud consoles, ticketing).

Where vCISO Lite leads

On the overlap (vCISO platform capabilities)

  • Direct-buyer access. Buy the platform directly at /pricing (add a named vCISO at Ultra or Enterprise); Cynomi sells exclusively through MSP/MSSP partners, so a direct end-buyer has to find and sign with an MSP intermediary first.[4]
  • Published pricing. Public tiers starting at $3,228 / yr billed annually on /pricing; Cynomi is book-a-demo only with per-account MSP tier pricing that isn’t public.
  • Framework breadth. 250+ frameworks cross-mapped to 1,468 controls via SCF vs Cynomi’s 40+ published frameworks;[5] vCISO Lite adds education frameworks absent from cynomi.com/frameworks (CIPA, COPPA, FERPA).
  • Custom framework support. Customers add their own frameworks and cross-map to SCF; Cynomi’s catalog is vendor-curated only.
  • Regulated-industry depth. Native workflows for education, government/defense, healthcare BA, and PE portfolio companies. Cynomi’s pattern targets MSP customer bases that skew SMB/mid-market SaaS.
  • Continuous maturity monitoring. Program maturity scored continuously with trajectory over time; Cynomi measures compliance state and workplan progress, not program maturity per se.

Beyond the overlap (Cynomi does not compete)

  • Evidence graph. Queryable graph of every claim → evidence → attestation → source, per-event Ed25519-signed, RFC 3161-timestamped, with an independent verifier. See use case · docs.vcisolite.com. Cynomi ships a workplan and an audit log.
  • Auditor-side surface. firm.vcisolite.com is a full auditor-side surface — auditors log in, see signed evidence, request artifacts, sign attestations against the graph. Cynomi doesn’t ship a dedicated auditor surface.
  • Cyber risk quantification (Ultra+). FAIR-derived Monte Carlo, expected-annual-loss, and loss-exceedance curves native to the platform at Ultra and Enterprise tiers. Cynomi markets financial-exposure risk scoring; no FAIR/Monte Carlo method published.
  • Third-party incident response. DC-TPIR / Refraction re-derives conditional $-exposure hourly during a live vendor breach. Cynomi doesn’t ship incident-time vendor math.
  • Vendor concentration analysis. HHI scoring across the vendor inventory surfaces disproportionate single-vendor exposure.
  • M&A cyber diligence. Cyber Cost of Deal (CCOD) for buy-side and portco quarterly via 5-pillar QCD. Cynomi doesn’t operate in M&A.
  • Operational resilience. DORA / NYDFS §500.16 / NIST CSF RC alignment with BIA, dependency-graph mapping, ORE scoring, and scenario rehearsal. Cynomi ships BIA/BCP and includes DORA in its catalog; vCISO Lite differentiates on ORE scoring + scenario rehearsal.
  • KRI automation. Key Risk Indicators tracked continuously with threshold alerting and evidence drill-down. Cynomi doesn’t ship KRIs.
  • Governed autonomous operations. Every autonomous action runs through a scoped, signed authority grant with measured-action traces. Cynomi’s AI is a workflow generator that produces plans and questionnaire answers — not a governed agent runtime. See Trustworthy Autonomy™.
  • MCP tool graph. Titanium exposes 100+ evidence-backed tools via MCP to LLM clients. Cynomi doesn’t expose an MCP surface.
  • Board-ready reporting. Templated quarterly packet with narrative synthesis, CRQ figures, and scenario overlays — see executive reporting. Cynomi’s reporting is MSP-QBR-oriented (client status, workplan progress).
  • Named vCISO (Ultra+). Ultra tier: CISO consulting 4h/mo; Enterprise: dedicated vCISO Advisor. Cynomi’s model is that the MSP’s staff runs it — the platform hands them the workplan.

The single most decisive difference: Cynomi sells exclusively through MSP, MSSP, and vCISO-consultancy partners. vCISO Lite sells direct (with optional white-label). A direct end-buyer cannot license Cynomi without going through a service-provider intermediary; a service-provider can white-label vCISO Lite but doesn’t have to.

Pick Cynomi if you’re an MSP, MSSP, or vCISO consultancy standing up or scaling a security-services practice across many client accounts. Cynomi is purpose-built for that motion: multitenant client management, encoded methodology so junior staff can produce senior-level outputs, a tiered partner program with MDF and enablement, and reference outcomes framed in MSP metrics (deal velocity, margin per account).

Pick vCISO Lite if you’re an end-buyer (founder, CFO, board director, VP ops) evaluating CISO coverage for your own company — or a PE firm buying it for portfolio companies. You get published pricing, a named vCISO (Ultra+), and education-framework coverage (CIPA, COPPA, FERPA) absent from Cynomi’s catalog, plus FAIR-derived $-cyber-risk, vendor-incident exposure computed within hours, M&A cyber diligence, and a signed evidence graph — none of which are on Cynomi’s roadmap.

Scope & evaluation criteria

Boundaries§2

In scope

Buyer profile
Two distinct buyers evaluating both: (a) MSPs, MSSPs, and vCISO consultancies choosing a service-delivery platform for their client base; (b) direct end-buyers — founders, CFOs, board directors, PE firms — evaluating vCISO coverage for a 25–500-employee company without a full-time in-house CISO.
Evaluation frame
Twelve capability categories the buyer is evaluating BOTH tools for. Not: everything each product does.
Comparison basis
Published product documentation, live product surfaces, public pricing where disclosed, and vendor-published customer disclosures. Not: analyst reports, vendor-sponsored bakeoffs, or internal-only NDA material.

Out of scope

Partner-tier-only capabilities
Cynomi Elevate Platinum tier partners get MDF, dedicated CSM, priority access to beta features and roadmap input.[1] Those tier-gated benefits aren’t evaluated here; this page compares the product features an MSP or a direct buyer sees on day one.
Service delivered by the MSP
Cynomi’s value depends heavily on which MSP delivers it and how experienced their analyst staff is. This page evaluates Cynomi’s in-product capability, not the delivery quality of any given MSP partner.
Roadmap
Only shipped, generally-available capability is compared. Beta and private-preview capabilities are footnoted where public.

Capability coverage

Twelve capabilities§3

Amber = Cynomi ships it. Teal = vCISO Lite ships it. Split = both ship it (weighted when one is materially stronger). Hover a hex for the mechanism detail.

Capability deep-dives

How each side implements it§4

Five capabilities, one spec-card per side. Same slots on both cards so the reader can eye-compare row by row. Framework decomposition lives in §5.

§4.1

Vendor risk & third-party incident response

Both platforms ship static vendor questionnaires and continuous scanning. The difference is what happens when a vendor discloses a breach.

Cynomi

Static questionnaire + continuous scanning; TPRM is a separate add-on SKU.

Inputs
SIG / CAIQ / custom questionnaires · external scan of vendor domains (TLS, headers, breach signals).
Outputs
Weighted questionnaire scores · risk-tier assignments.
Evidence
Assessment records · tiered vendor inventory in the workplan.
Fails when
A critical vendor discloses a breach — no in-platform response, no hourly $-exposure re-derivation.
vCISO Lite

Same static-assessment primitives, plus DC-TPIR conditional-exposure engine for live incidents.

Inputs
Same questionnaire + scanning primitives · plus a formal dependency graph mapping vendors to business functions.
Outputs
Conditional $-exposure re-derived hourly during an incident · cheapest-mitigation naming.
Evidence
Signed exposure trace in the evidence graph · DC-TPIR methodology published on /briefs-and-specs.
Fails when
Vendor hasn't disclosed the incident — the engine has nothing to re-derive against.
§4.2

Cyber risk quantification

Cynomi
Markets financial-exposure risk scoring; no FAIR/Monte Carlo method published. Buyers requiring an underwritten $-CRQ output (loss-exceedance curve, P90 loss) deploy a separate tool (typical: SAFE Security, ThreatConnect) alongside Cynomi.
vCISO Lite

FAIR + NIST 800-30 Monte Carlo, native surface inside the vCISO platform.

Inputs
Loss Event Frequency ranges · Loss Magnitude ranges · calibration from FAIR standard sources + customer-scope inputs.
Outputs
Expected Annual Cost + P90 loss · loss-exceedance curve · priced scenarios usable for cyber-insurance conversations.
Evidence
Signed scenario runs in the evidence graph · quarterly board packet with narrative synthesis.
Fails when
Buyer wants an enterprise-scale proprietary industry-loss dataset — we calibrate from FAIR standard sources, not one.
§4.3

M&A cyber diligence

Cynomi
Not shipped. No sell-side, buy-side, or portco-side M&A cyber-diligence capability in-product. PE / IB buyers typically overlay a Kroll / Deloitte / boutique diligence firm.
vCISO Lite

Cyber Cost of Deal (CCOD) + 5-pillar Quantitative Cyber Diligence (QCD).

Inputs
Target's attack surface · vendor concentration · data sensitivity · insurability · remediation-cost baseline.
Outputs
CCOD as a dollar figure decomposed into Risk Cost + Remediation Cost · portco quarterly delta.
Evidence
Buy-side pre-signing packet (5-day surface) · portco quarterly board packet · sponsor-level portfolio view for cross-holding concentration risk.
Fails when
Target hasn't cooperated on data-room access — pillars fall back to signal-only estimation.
§4.4

Advisory & vCISO time

Cynomi

Advisory hours delivered by the MSP partner, not by Cynomi.

Inputs
MSP's own analyst staff · Cynomi's encoded methodology ("CISO Intelligence") tooling the analyst uses.
Outputs
MSP-defined engagement outputs; hours-per-client set by the MSP, not standardized by Cynomi.
Evidence
Whatever the MSP delivers as part of its bundled monthly retainer.
Fails when
Direct end-buyer wants to license the platform without contracting through an MSP first — not available.
vCISO Lite

Ultra tier: CISO consulting 4h/mo; Enterprise: dedicated vCISO Advisor.

Inputs
Practitioner assigned at Ultra+ tier signup · direct platform access for the advisor.
Outputs
Attested policies · scenario runs against the buyer's own posture · quarterly board packet drafts.
Evidence
Advisor's actions traced in the evidence graph · attested artifacts referenced by name.
Fails when
Buyer on Starter / lower tier wants named-vCISO hours — upgrade to Ultra or Enterprise.
§4.5

Pricing model & sales motion

Cynomi

MSP-tier license, per-client-account, book-a-demo only.

Inputs
MSP's revenue commitment (Elevate Silver / Gold / Platinum) · number of client accounts on-platform.
Outputs
Volume-tier pricing quote after partner-sizing conversation; no published list price on any SKU.
Evidence
MSP contract with Cynomi + downstream MSP-to-client contract; direct end-buyer sees only the MSP paper.
Fails when
CFO wants to size the deal without going through an MSP — no direct path to license the platform.
vCISO Lite

Published tiers, direct-sold to end-buyers.

Inputs
Buyer's tier choice (Starter / Pro / Ultra / Enterprise); framework coverage scales with tier.
Outputs
Signed order form referencing the /pricing published rate · monthly or annual billing.
Evidence
Public /pricing page + terms-of-service; Starter tier $3,228 / yr billed annually.
Fails when
Buyer wants full MSP-style multitenant client management — vCISO Lite for Partners white-label arriving Q4 2026, but the direct-to-customer platform isn't primarily a channel-partner product.
